FAO/ITALY COOPERATIVE PROGRAMME

Farmers' Cooperatives

As stated in FAO Media Centre, the 2012 will be the International Year of Cooperatives, so that means that an increasingly attention is given to Cooperatives and producer organizations, which are important in efforts to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty around the world.

These are the words of FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva at the 2012 Thematic Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil, during an official meeting with the Economic and Social Development Council (CDES) of Brazil.

The Italian Contribution to FAO Trust Fund for Food Security and Safety is developing this approach in all the field projects, by implementing the Food Security through Commercialization of Agriculture (FSCA) strategy, which aims at empowering Farmers-based Organizations and providing them with capacities and opportunities to play an active role in the agricultural value chain.
