Objective Strengthen the capacity and capability in the use of treated wastewater in forestry and agroforestry production methods towards achieving sustainable livelihoods in selected countries of the North Africa Mediterranean region.
Activities and Outcomes This new comprehensive programme aims at providing a framework for more integrated, cohesive and harmonized mechanisms that will help stimulate stronger engagement and support from concerned member countries as well as mobilize additional resources. In order to overcome the shortage of water, countries have developed safe, environmentally sound and cost-efficient ways to treat municipal wastewater produced by communities and industries, and to utilize it for irrigation purposes. The re-use of wastewater resources allows recycling of nutrients for productive purposes and leads to a reduced discharge of wastewater into rivers and sea. The project aims at enhancing: i) Operational concepts for sustainable agroforestry and forestry production methods using treated waste water; ii) The institutional and regulatory frameworks in the project countries; iii) The transfer of knowledge and technologies regarding forestry and agroforestry systems and poplar cultivation and the use of treated waste water in agroforestry and forestry for a better smallholders’ and farmers’ livelihoods.
