FAO and Civil Society Organizations collaborate on wide range of activities at many levels. For example, at the local level consultative approaches to foster innovation, adaptation and adoption of agricultural techniques and technologies have been at the heart of FAO’s field programme for many years, demonstrated in the “Farmers’ Field Schools” initiatives and the growth of “Integrated Pest Management” worldwide. At the global level, conventions, guidelines and discussion platforms have increasingly been developed as a result of the direct relations of civil society with governments and other actors. The processes of development, negotiation, adoption and implementation of the “Voluntary Guidelines to support the progressive realization of the right to adequate food in the context of national food security” and the “International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture” demonstrate how CSOs, governments and the FAO Secretariat are collaborating in jointly building a global agenda on food and agriculture.
