We have developed an inventory of principles and good practices to be applied in managing 'messy' policy processes, and we are highly alert to potential pitfalls.

The lessons we have learned in wide-ranging work have given us insights into how to provide policy assistance in the most effective way, with the correct combination of technical and “soft” skills.

The correct application of good practices when managing policy processes demands a thorough understanding of the contexts in which the policy will take shape. We have developed a concept and (draft) guidelines on how to analyse policy contexts, and selected a series of tools to aid this process.

Policy processes require negotiation among various stakeholders. Our team has developed a programme for capacity development in negotiation skills, using experiential learning based on simulations and case studies. We have organised various negotiation training events, and the topic is an integral part of our Policy Learning Programme.
