Participation to the 1st International Conference on Green Economy AMBIENTAL 2012
Background: The conference was organized by the Institute Acao Verde, Instituto Brasil and GVC Italy with partners who are pro-active in green economy linked with land use and in value chain labelling (Green Farm CO2FREE, Candex USA, Green Development Initiative, Carbon Clear, FAO, etc.).
Conference aims : To launch and promote the implementation of the PNBSAE/MT Platform for Business with Environment and Ecosystem Goods and Services of Mato Grosso (see http://www.pnbsae.com.br/portal/) which will support companies and communities by providing guidance and certification to participants.
EX-ACT can be used in the context of ex-ante project formulation and is capable of covering the range of development projects relevant for the land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) sector. This could help the decision process on implementing different options with best benefits in terms of mitigation, natural resources protection, and economy. The carbon balance appraisal could also be used in land-use mitigation policy and economic analyses to anticipate the manifestation of risk by erasing its destructive effects, by finding the proper funds to make the area more resilient.
Outcome: The FAO presentation was on “Climate Smart Agriculture and Green Economy - Policy and Planning aspects”, covering Climate smart agriculture support policies and went through the utility of GHG carbon tools to appraise carbon balance of investment projects and green land use plans of farms.
The discussions with platform partners considered possible partnership support which could be provided by FAO to the platform as: (i) training and capacity building support on low carbon planning; (ii) support on CSA improved field techniques on PES; (iii) training material, guidelines; and (iv) project and value chain foot printing, farmers land use plan carbon appraisal.
Follow up: The PNBSAE Platform for Business with Environment and Ecosystem Goods and Services initially launched in Mato Grosso aims at expanding. This platform with its partners should reach a wide number of farmers in Brazil, Argentina and India.
Instituto Brasil/GVC is currently operating with 17 brazilian states and Argentina with family agriculture, and Swapan covers whole Northeast of India involved.
Two events are planned for the coming months regarding the participant institutions effort on PNBSAE international development.
- The first is a Stakeholders meeting for IPBES (Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem services) knowledge exchange to be held by GCS in September at Bonn, Germany.
- The second is a side event at the 11th COP on biodiversity in October at Hyderabad, India, when the PNBSAE should start operating simultaneously in Cuiabá, Belo Horizonte, Bologna and New Delhi.
