Current partnerships: UN Foundation for International Partnerships

The UN Foundation (UNF), established through a donation by Ted Turner, has funded a number of FAO projects since 1999 through its operational branch, the UN Foundation for International Partnerships (UNFIP).

Examples of some key past and ongoing UNFIP projects implemented by different FAO Departments, include:

  • the "UN Atlas of Oceans", a digital web-based, interactive atlas on the sustainable use of oceans. See press release;
  • the "Establishment of the Global Crop Diversity Trust Fund Governance Structure", which is funding the Secretariat for the Global Crop Diversity Trust Fund at www.startwithaseed.org;
  • the "Community-based Commercial Enterprise Development for the conservation of biodiversity at World Heritage Sites " project with the objective of creating viable community-based enterprises that improve livelihoods while providing incentives for sustainable natural resource management at Bwindi World Heritage Site. See press release;
  • the "Empowerment of Women in Irrigation and Water Resources of Improved Household, Food Security, Nutrition and Health" project which targets food-insecure rural households, with a new multidisciplinary and multisectoral approach aiming at raising their capacity in accessing natural resources for agricultural production and in developing diversified and healthier diets;
  • and the "Central African World Heritage Forest Initiative/CAWHI"initiated in 2004, which will bring together FAO, UNESCO and four international conservation NGOs in a major project that will address critical problems in a high priority forest region.
