AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK
The African Development Bank (AfDB) is committed to the fight against poverty in Africa and invests heavily in rural development. It devotes around 20 percent of its lending to the agricultural sector and concentrates much of this on regional projects that will benefit one or more countries.
As many African countries are critically short of experienced people and institutions, AfDB works with the Investment Centre on the varying stages of complex project design from identification to the writing of the completion report.
Since 1968 to 2008, AfDB has approved 159 projects for a total value of more than USD3.7 billion, which were prepared with Investment Centre assistance.
Recent projects have included:
-
Sierra Leone - Rehabilitation of the Agricultural Sector
-
Regional - Multinational Programme to Improve the Competitiveness of the Cotton-Textile Sector (Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali)
-
Mali - Development of Animal Production in South-Kayes Project

Women are critically important to agriculture in Africa. In Malawi, for example, they do more than two-thirds of all smallholder farm work. Nevertheless, women have received only a small share of agricultural investment. One of the Investment Centre's priorities with AfDB is to promote gender equity in investment.
