5th Anniversary of the Voluntary Guidelines on Tenure
09/10/2017 - Abstract: The Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT) were endorsed by the Committee on World Food Security on 11 May 2012. Over the past five years, there has been an extraordinary increase in awareness of the importance of, and the potential for, the Voluntary Guidelines to make a real difference through responsible governance of tenure, which has been strongly reinforced by the SDGs. Continuous long-term commitment efforts to the VGGT by all stakeholders, in addressing tenure issues is needed to improve food security, reduce poverty, safeguard the environment and reduce conflicts. The video has been produced, with the financial support of the European Union, on the occasion of a high-level event to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the Voluntary Guidelines, held at FAO Headquarters on 10 October 2017.

What's on the Horizon?
16/07/2017 - Abstract: The Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security is the first global exhaustive tool on the tenure of land and natural resources developed through an open inter-governmental process with the full and effective participation of a vast array of relevant actors. In such document, internationally accepted principles and norms were established to define responsible practices for the use and control of land, fisheries and forests. In the course of a long but highly successful negotiation process, civil society organizations and social movements had a significant impact in the development of the guidelines in a number of key points. Contributing with informed and compelling interventions, they brought forward the points of view, experiences, voices and proposals of small-scale food producers, family farmers and the sectors of the world’s population that are most exposed to food insecurity.

Caring for Commons - Securing legitimate rights
09/01/2017 - Abstract: Millions of people worldwide depend on natural resources such as land, fisheries and forests that are used collectively as commons. Commons are essential to culture, identity and well-being. As a source of food and income, they are an important safety-net, especially for the most marginalized and vulnerable people. The Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security provide a historic opportunity to recognize and secure tenure rights to commons. This film explains key strategies on how to make responsible governance of tenure rights to commons a reality.
