Appeals

Under the UN Tsunami Flash Appeal launched on 6 January, FAO appealed for US$26.5 million to assist farmers and fishers affected by tsunami with urgently needed inputs, and another US$2.5 million for regional partnership projects with UNDP and UNEP. From its own resources, FAO provided US $1.5 million for emergency operations. Under the Mid-Term Review, FAO has increased its appeal for assistance to US$103 million. While the initial appeal covered emergency needs, the current estimate reflects the full extent of the rehabilitation requirements for fisheries, agriculture and forestry.

Indonesia

US$24 million are needed of which US$10 million for the emergency provision of tools and other essential agricultural inputs for the rapid re-start of small scale food crop production in tsunami affected communities; US$8 million to provide essential inputs to Tsunami victims for the rapid start of small-scale fisheries activities; and US$6 million for support to the coordination and emergency assistance for the restart of staple food production by disaster affected communities through agriculture and fisheries.

Sri Lanka

US$39.95 million are required, of which US$13.4 million are for the replacement and repair of boats, engines and fishing gear; US$10 million for emergency rehabilitation of fishery harbours and anchorages and production -related infrastructure in Sri Lanka; US$1.55 million for the establishment of technical coordinating unit for the agriculture sector; US$10 million for the reclamation of affected agriculture land and provision of basic inputs to resume farming in the most affected districts in Sri Lanka..

Maldives

US$8.97 million are needed of which US$5.67 million are for the rehabilitation of marine fisheries sector and agriculture; US$3 million for replacement of farming inputs to farmers and home gardeners; US$146 000 for geographical information systems and infrastructure; and US$150 000 for rehabilitation of mangroves forests, home gardens, agro forestry and trees to restore livelihoods and coastal ecosystems.

Thailand

US$3.3 million are needed of which US$1.5 million are for emergency assistance to the Tsunami-affected fishing communities in southern Thailand; US$730 000 are required for emergency assistance to the Tsunami-affected farmers to restart agricultural production in southern Thailand; US$900 000 for response assistance on the rehabilitation of natural resources and environmental damages in the affected areas of Thailand; and US$170 000 for in-depth assessment of mangroves and other coastal forests affected by the tsunami in southern Thailand.

Seychelles

US$2.75 million are needed for the rehabilitation of artisanal fisheries.

Somalia:

US$2 million are needed to assist 2 000 fishers through the provision/repair of fishing boats and equipment and for training in improved fishing techniques and boat construction

Myanmar

US$ 404 000 are needed for provision fishing boats and gear, technical guidance, training and supervision, as well as agricultural inputs such as seeds, seedlings, fertilizers and hand tools.
