Millions of farmers and fisherfolk in coastal areas have been affected by the Tsunami disaster. So far, FAO has received US$200 000 from the initial appeal for US$29 million. An additional US$9 458 000 have been officially confirmed. FAO has provided US$1.5 million from its own resources.

Algeria, Belgium, Canada, China, the European Commission, Italy and the UK are currently negotiating contributions for FAO's rehabilitation efforts in the region.
