FAO's response

Fisheries, coastal eco-systems and agriculture have been most seriously hit by the tsunami disaster.

FAO assessment teams together with other UN agencies and national governments are currently evaluating damages and needs in the areas to obtain a clear picture of the rehabilitation needs in fisheries and agriculture and define appropriate interventions to help rebuild people's livelihoods.

Emergency coordinators, national and international consultants with high levels of technical skills have been sent to the region and distribution of essential inputs for a rapid re-start of fishing activities is being planned.
