  • An end to the momentous six months of Expo Milano 2015

    Three UN Days, dozens of conferences and international forums, hundreds of technical scientific events, guided visits for over 15,000 students of all ages, and thousands of people who played “get to Zero”.  

  • Events of the week (October 26 - 31)

    In these last few days of Expo 2015, among other activities the Sahel & West Africa Week organized by OECD and the screening of the documentary "Hungry and Foolish - The great adventure of food" will take place. 

  • The film about the UN's theme for Expo 2015 will be screened at "Alice nella Città"

    The film dedicated to the United Nations’ theme for Expo Milano 2015 –“The Zero hunger Challenge • United for a sustainable world” – will be screened on the 20 October at the "Alice nella Città" festival, the cinema festival for youngsters that runs parallel to the Rome Cinema Festival. 

  • Events of the week (October 19 - 25)

    UN representatives, in particular from FAO and UNEP, will participate in a number of conferences to address topics such as food security and nutrition, sustainable food systems and access to markets. 


  • Events of the week (October 12 - 18)

    A week full of events that culminate in the celebrations of World Food Day, which these here commemorates the 70th anniversary of the founding of FAO. The official ceremony will include the participation, among others, of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the Director-General of FAO José Graziano da Silva and the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella.

  • Food Moves the World concert at Expo 2015 opens World Food Day celebrations

    The celebrations of World Food Day at Expo Milano 2015 will open on 25 October with the Food Moves the World concert with performances by No Hunger Orchestra, Fronteras Musicales Abiertas and Giovanni Allevi. 

  • "get to Zero" goal reached

    The app takes inspiration from the UN’s primary message for the world exposition: “ending hunger in the world is everyone’s responsibility. We all have a role to play, even through the commitment to change simple everyday decisions and actions”. From virtual to real-life, this commitment can make the difference.

  • The high school students who want to make a difference win the Zero Hunger Challenge video contest

    We can make a change is the title of the winning video in the Short Food Movie category dedicated to the United Nations’ theme for Expo Milano 2015: “The Zero Hunger challenge • United for a sustainable world”.  But who can make a change?

    Children's nutrition, women's empowerment, sustainable development in the Mediterranean area, food safety, microgardening and the Charter of Milan: these are the topics and issues discussed this week at Expo Milano 2015.   

  • Events of the week (September 28 - October 4)

    The UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Ms Hilal Elver, will be at Expo on October 1. UNEP and IFAD representatives will also participate in other events at Expo 2015 this week.

  • Coloring with sand, a chance for young ones to learn about the Zero Hunger Challenge.

    A special edition of Sabbiarelli dedicated to the UN theme for Expo Milano 2015. By colouring in all six illustrations created by Lorenzo Terranera, children will learn about what must be done to eliminate hunger in our world.

  • Events of the week (September 21 - 27)

    This week there are six events taking place at Expo Milano 2015, with UN participation. Included among these events is “The Water Rooms”, the premiere of the UN World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP)-UNESCO project.

  • One month from the most important day at Expo Milano 2015: the World Food Day

    The day that has been flagged as the most important day at Expo Milano 2015 is getting closer.  In exactly a month the World Exposition in Milan will host the official World Food Day celebrations.

    Seven days of events in Expo 2015, including the VI World Congress of Agronomists, the conference on "Agricultural biodiversity, value chains and women's empowerment" and the "International Geneva Food Talks". 

  • Schools discover the UN Itinerary at Expo Milano 2015

    With the start of the new school year, school trips will begin to flock to Expo Milano 2015 once more. To enrich student visits, groups have the opportunity to sign up for a visit of Pavilion Zero, a fundamental part of the UN Itinerary at Expo.

    August 31: 'Sustainable Human Development International Summer School will be held at the KIP International School Pavilion - Attractive territories for a sustainable world - at Expo Milano 2015 until the 13 September.

  • Events of the week (August 24-30)

    August 26: "Sustainable Technologies and Cooperation in Food and Agriculture & UNIDO International Award 2015" is an event organized by the Italian Cooperation, UNIDO and CNR that will be held at the Auditorium of Cascina Triulza at Expo Milano 2015.

  • World Humanitarian Day - 19 August

    On 19 August, one of the international celebrations of the World Humanitarian Day will take place at Expo Milano 2015. The theme of WHD 2015 is to “Inspire the World’s Humanity.” 


  • Events of the week (August 3 - 9)

    On August 7 and 8 a pre-conference of the International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE) gathers high level speakers from academia, major international organisations and governments to provide a closer look at the various dimensions of food security.

    Launch of the educational exhibit on the work of Alberto Manzi at KIP Pavilion and event by UNAOC on "Celebrating Diversity and Intercultural Dialogue through Arts".

  • Queen Letizia of Spain visits Expo 2015 as FAO Special Ambassador for Nutrition

    To show its commitment to hunger eradication, Spain's pavilion hosts a UN Space which highlights its support for the Zero Hunger Challenge, launched by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in 2012,and which is the UN's primary theme at Expo.

  • Events of the week (July 20 - 26)

    The visit of Queen Letizia of Spain is among the key events of the coming days. On the occasion of this visit, the Queen will participate in a briefing session by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which has recently named her Special Ambassador for Nutrition.  

  • Events of the week (July 13-19)

    Expo Milano 2015 will host the UN Secretary-General's High Level Task Force on Global Food Security (HLTF) on 14 and 15 July. Its working groups are drafting the necessary definitions, policies, indicators and messages of the five elements of the Zero Hunger Challenge. 

  • A blue spoon on the Table of the World of Women for Expo to remember people suffering from hunger

    On Friday 10 July the grand finale of the Women's Weeks of Women for Expo took place with the "Table of the World". Over 350 women from the participating countries of Expo Milano 2015 met in Piazza Italia and walked the Decumano with their local traditional dishes.  The UN representatives joined the parade carrying the blue spoon, symbol of the Zero Hunger Challenge, representing all the peoples globally, especially women, yet without access to food and natural resources. 

  • Projects by FAO and IFAD among best practices on food security awarded at Expo 2015

    Two projects by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and one of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) are among the 18 best practices on food security that will be awarded on 6 July at the Auditorium of Palazzo Italia at Expo 2015.


  • Events of the week (July 6-12)

    Starting with the Best Practices Award Ceremony, this week also includes new events of the Women's Weeks such as the Aspen Forum and the closing round table and parade, the Fruit & Vegetables Day, a focus on durum wheat chains in Ethiopia and a three-day conference on the role of cooperative in sustainable development and Zero Hunger. 

  • Women's equality and empowerment - The first step to Zero Hunger

    Women's crucial role in the fight against hunger and malnutrition, a fundamental part of the UN Theme for Expo Milano 2015 “The Zero Hunger Challenge. Unite for a sustainable world”, will be recognized during the Women's Forum Italy (29-30 June), part of the Women’s Weeks by WE- Women for Expo. 

  • Events of the week (29 June - 5 July)

    A two-weeks programme of events dedicated to women starts on 29 June. Sustainable use of water, the importance of cereals in feeding the world and health, nutrition and food information will also be discussed during conferences and round tables in the following days. 

  • The UN's theme for Expo Milano 2015 explored through film in Pavilion Zero

    A nine-minute film to explain the United Nations’ theme for Expo Milano 2015: “The Zero Hunger Challenge • United for a sustainable world”.  Written and directed by Costanza Quatriglio and produced by Palomar, this film is one of the main content through which the United Nations disseminates its key message for the World Exposition: ending hunger in the world is everyone’s responsibility; we all have a part to play, starting with the commitment to change simple everyday actions and decisions. 

  • Events of the week (June 22-28)

    Rural development, the future of agriculture, livestock, climate change and food waste reduction. These topics take centre stage at Expo Milano 2015 this week in a number of events where many UN representatives will participate in. 

  • UN Under-Secretary-General Cristina Gallach commends UN presence at Expo Milano 2015

    This visit offered the UN Senior Management the opportunity to delve into the innovative UN participation at this universal exposition: for the first time in the history of the Expos, the United Nations doesn't have a pavilion but content throughout the exposition site. This represents one of the major features of Expo Milano 2015.

  • Failing lands are eroding our security UN warns - World Day to Combat Desertification at Expo Milano 2015

    17 June, Milan – Land degradation is a growing threat to global security, according to Ms. Monique Barbut, Executive Secretary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, who spoke today at the global observance of the World Day to Combat Desertification at the EXPO Milano, in Italy.

  • Forum on Remittances and Development opens on "International Day of Family Remittances"

    About 250 million migrant workers live outside the country they call home. A significant majority of them send money home, typically US$200 or US$300 several times a year. Adding together all the millions of transactions involved, remittances reached US$436 billion to developing countries in 2014.

    Global remittances represent more than three times Official Development Assistance and often surpass foreign direct investment.

  • Ministers from Least Developed Countries in Africa to meet at Expo Milano 2015

    Ministers of Foreign Affairs and senior officials from African Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and will come together for a three day meeting, from 8 to 10 June, at Expo Milano 2015. The evevent will be opened by H.E. Mr. Paolo Gentiloni, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Italy.

  • Biggest Day for Positive Environmental Action Kicks off with a Call to ‘Consume with Care’

    Milan, 4 June 2015 – World Environment Day (WED), the UN’s principal vehicle to encourage worldwide awareness and action for the environment, will be celebrated around the world on 5 June with a call to governments, communities and individuals to improve their consumption patterns.

  • Global debate on Agriculture and Food Security takes centre stage at Expo Milano 2015

    On 4 June 2015, the International Agricultural Forum begins at Expo Milano 2015 with the participation of Ministers of Agriculture from participating countries and High-level Representatives of the UN Rome-based Agencies.
    The Forum will be the occasion for a global reflection and discussion of the role that agriculture and the rural world will play in the challenges of providing enough food to feed the projected 9 billion people in 2050.
    This issue is also at the centre of the UN theme for Expo 2015, “The Zero Hunger Challenge • United for a sustainable world”.

  • UNIDO ITPO Italy International Award ‘Innovative Ideas and Technologies on Agribusiness’

    The international call for tender is open to innovative ideas and technologies aimed at identifying the best technologies available that could lead to social and economic improvements if or when implemented in Developing Countries (DCs).

  • Getting ready to celebrate the World Environment Day at Expo Milano 2015

    The World Environment Day on 5 June is drawing near, with the theme “7 billion dreams. One planet. Consume with care”.  This day offers an opportunity to discuss and address environmental topics –particularly those dealing with sustainable production and consumption– through a variety of events. 

  • World hunger falls to 800 million, eradication is the next goal

    72 countries have achieved the Millennium Development target of halving proportion of the chronically undernourished

    27 May 2015, Rome - The number of hungry people in the world has dropped to 795 million -- 216 million fewer than in 1990-92 -- or around one person out of every nine, according to the latest edition of the annual UN hunger report (The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2015 – SOFI). 


  • Press conference to present new UN hunger report

    The State of Food Insecurity in the World (SOFI) includes new figures on the number of undernourished people in the final year of the MDG cycle and identifies critical factors in the effort to combat hunger.

    On Wednesday 27 May at 11:00h CEST, the three Rome-based UN food agencies – The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the UN World Food Program (WFP) – will publish the 2015 edition of their annual The State of Food Insecurity in the World (SOFI) report.

    The event will be webcast live and the new SOFI report The new SOFI report, published in Arabic, English, Chinese, French, Spanish and Russian, will be available online from 11:00 am. Simultaneously the new Hunger Map will be screened on the Expo totems and on the megascreen of the UN Garden.​
  • The General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean 39th regular session opens at Expo 2015

    The General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) opens the 39th regular session at Expo Milano 2015 on 25 May, hosted by the Ministry of agriculture, food and forestry. 

    At the end of the opening ceremony in the “Sala Auditorium” in the Italian Pavilion the delegates will tour the World Exposition, visiting the different UN Spaces that make up the UN Itinerary, among other things. 

  • The UN and the EU explore sustainable agriculture and fish farming at Expo Milano 2015

    Amongst the wide array of events promoted by the European Union at Expo Milano 2015, two events in particular try to answer the questions that this challenge poses: “The role & contribution of Europe’s Agricultural Machinery Industry in promoting sustainable agriculture and food security” and “Aquaculture in Europe: a model for the future?”

  • Conference organised by the Italian Cooperation brings the discussion of the Post-2015 Agenda to Expo Milano 2015

    A World Exposition the likes of the one in Milan with the theme “Feeding the Planet. Energy for Life”, would not be complete without a discussion about nutrition and sustainability, two of the themes at the center of the international Post-2015 Agenda debate.  This discussion will take place during the “Post 2015 Development Agenda: sustainable agriculture, food and nutrition security” conference scheduled for the 14 and 15 of May in the Palazzo Castiglioni in Milan and organized by the Italian Cooperation for Development. 

  • UNIDO, illycaffé and Ernesto Illy Foundation sign agreement to make Ethiopian coffee more inclusive and sustainable

    MILAN, 4 May 2015.  The Expo Milano 2015 Coffee Cluster will see the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to mark the agreement reached between the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), illycaffè and the Ernesto Illy Foundation to work towards making the Ethiopian coffee value chain more inclusive and sustainable, benefitting farmers and consumers alike.

  • The UN will hold up high the flag for food security and nutrition at Expo Milan 2015

    “The UN is proud to be here to highlight the cause of food security,” Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in his video-message welcoming visitors to the UN Garden, an open-air area close to Pavilion Zero and the Expo's entrance, where visitors will be introduced to the UN theme for Expo 2015, "The Zero Hunger Challenge • United for a sustainable world".

  • “The UN is proud to be at EXPO Milano 2015 to highlight the cause of food security”

    Expo Milano 2015 will be hosted in Milan, Italy, between 1 May and 31 October 2015 with the theme “Feeding the Planet. Energy for Life”. The UN Commissioner-General for Expo 2015, Mr Eduardo Rojas-Briales, will participate in the official opening of the Expo, along with the Commissioners-General of some 130 participating countries. The United Nations’ participation at Expo 2015 provides a unique opportunity to build momentum around food-related issues. In this regard, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has designated the Rome-based agencies (FAO, IFAD and WFP), under the Director-General of FAO, to lead in the coordination of the 20 UN agencies participating at Expo.

  • The fight against hunger in the world explained to young visitors at Expo Milan 2015

    Children's Park will host one of the UN Spoon Installations from the Zero Hunger Itinerary, with content made specifically for girls and boys. 

    (Milan, 22 April 2015) The Zero Hunger Challenge, UN participation theme, will also be within the reach of children who visit Expo Milano 2015. The Children's Park also hosts one of the 18 UN installations, thus offering the vision of a world where no one, from the youngest to oldest, suffers from hunger.
