A two-weeks programme of events dedicated to women starts on 29 June at Expo Milano 2015. Sustainable use of water, the importance of cereals in feeding the world and helth, nutrition and food information will also be discussed during conferences and round tables in the following days.
29 June – 10 July: The other half of the Planet - Women’s Weeks. A rich programme of international events dedicated to the ”gender dimension of food and nutrition” will alternate between conferences, debates and moments of entertainment – readings, meetings, shows and performances. These will portray nutrition as a form of enrichment for the body and soul with the support of female artists, writers, actors and singers from around the world.
- 29-30 June: Women's Forum Italy, Nurturing a sustainable future – two days of events debating solutions in which women can make a difference. On 30 June the Executive Director of World Food Programme (WFP) Ertharin Cousin and the former Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Honorary President of Women for Expo Emma Bonino will address on ”Women's equality and empowerment - The first step to Zero Hunger”.
- 8-10 July: The Aspen Forum at Expo, Food Security, Nutrition and Global Health. The Aspen Forum at Expo programming will feature a series of workshops, panel discussions, interviews, dinner events and tutorials to foster dialogue, aggregate ideas, and showcase innovations in food security, nutrition, global health, sustainability in the challenge of Expo: Feeding the Planet. On 10 July, Marcela Villarreal, Director of the Office for Partnerships, Advocacy and Capacity Development of FAO will participate in a panel discussion on ”Investing in innovations: women and technologies”.
30 June: #FoodSavingBEC Competition Week Finals and Award Ceremony, organized by the Luigi Bocconi University. Ms Clara Velez Fraga, UN-Expo team coordinator, is part of the jury that will select the winning student projects at the finals and award ceremony at the Italian Pavilion at Expo Milano 2015. 1-16 July: Workshops for kids on healthy and proper nutrition, educational and recreational activities organized by UNICEF Italia. At the end of these workshops, the paricipating kids will make a ”Pigotta”, an endearing Milanese petname for rag doll. Each year school children, seniors citizens, service clubs and volunteers get together to hand-make rag dolls representing children around the world. These dolls are then exhibited and sold by UNICEF to raise funds for programmes addressing child malnutrition.
1 July: The hunger of water and its sustainable use for cropping systems, a debate organized by the National Center of Research of Italy (CNR) at the Italian Pavilion, at 10.00 am. Mr Pasquale Steduto of the FAO Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa will give a speech on the topic "Water and Food Security: Challenges and Solutions". More information here.
1-3 July: Grains for feeding the world a three-days conference organized by the Italian and the International Association for Cereal Science and Technology at the Università degli Studi di Milano. On July 1 at 11.30 am Bioversity International’s Carlo Fadda (Theme Leader, Productive Agricultural Ecosystems) will give a keynote lecture on ”The importance of cereal crop and genetic diversity to cope with the multiple challenges of 21st century agriculture” during the session "Setting the Scene". July 2: Land and food. Sustainable agriculture in emerging countries, a round table organized by the Italian magazine of geopolitics Limes and CNH Industrial at the Biodiversity Park of Expo Milano 2015 at 4.30 to 6.30 pm. Mr Aziz Elbehri, senior economist of the FAO Trade and Markets Division will participate.
July 3: Nutrition, Health and Food Information - Know what you eat, a conference organized by the European Commission Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety at the EU Pavilion from 10.00 am to 5 pm. Dr Francesco Branca, Director of the department of Nutrition for Health and Development of the World Health Organization (WHO) is participating in the morning session on ”International dialogue on sound strategies on nutrition and promotion of better nutrition through food information” at 11.15 am.
