Global Forum on Remittances and Development opens on "International Day of Family Remittances"

The first International Day of Family Remittances will be observed by more than 400 policy-makers, private sector representatives and civil society leaders at the opening of the Fifth Global Forum on Remittances and Development (GFRD2015), which will bring together remittances experts from all over the world from 16 to 19 June in Milan, at the Centro Congressi Stella Polare, next to the Expo Milano 2015.

Following endorsement by the 38th session of IFAD's Governing Council, the launch of the International Day of Family Remittances has the key objectives of recognizing the fundamental contributions made by migrant workers to the wellbeing of their families and communities of origin, and of raising global awareness on the impact that remittances have in these countries and on ways to maximize the development impact of these private flows.

Similarly, the GFRD2015, co-hosted by IFAD, the World Bank and the European Commission, will highlight the great potential of remittances to and from Europe, and its global impact and implications.

Kanayo F. Nwanze, IFAD President, Her Majesty Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, in her capacity as United Nations Secretary-General's Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development (UNSGSA), and Enrico Morando, Italy's Economy and Finances Vice Minister are the keynote speakers at the opening of the forum.
