On 19 June, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information Cristina Gallach visited the UN Itinerary at Expo 2015 Milano, guided by the UN-Expo Team.
This visit offered the UN Senior Management the opportunity to delve into the innovative UN participation at this universal exposition: for the first time in the history of the Expos, the United Nations doesn't have a pavilion but content throughout the exposition site. This represents one of the major features of Expo Milano 2015.
The visit started off at the UN Space and in the tent of the UN Garden, where Ms Gallach and her delegation were introduced to the UN-Expo Team. After a brief introduction the delegation proceeded to Pavilion Zero, where they were taken through the twelve rooms of the pavilion getting the opportunity to appreciate the UN Stele, seven panels that link the rooms’ concepts with the UN’s work in the specific areas and the elements of the Zero Hunger Challenge. UN content in the Pavilion Zero also include an exhibition of WFP SAFE stoves in the Containers room, while in the Market Room a UN-Expo motion graphic that details the state of the world's food prices and the UN’s work to eradicate hunger is shown. The winners of the “Best Practices in Sustainable Development” competition, including two projects by FAO and one by IFAD, are displayed in the final room of Pavilion Zero, along with a short film illustrating the UN’s theme for Expo 2015, directed by renowned Italian author and director Costanza Quatriglio.
The delegation then made their way to Cascina Triulza, the Civil Society area to visit one of the 18 Spaces of the UN Itinerary, the one dedicated to women’s empowerment and gender equality, the focus area of the UN’s theme for Expo - The Zero Hunger Challenge • United for a sustainable world - recognizing women's crucial role in all aspects of food security, from farm to fork.
After being greeted by the Vice-President of the Fondazione Triulza Ms Sabina Siniscalchi and representatives of the civil society organizations present in the Cascina Triulza, the tour stopped at the Rice Cluster, where the UN Space dedicated to the work done by the UN in this field is located. Here the delegation was met and greeted by the representatives of the countries participating in the cluster such as Laos, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Sierra Leone and Basmati Pavilions.
The tour continued to the pavilion of the Unite Arab Emirates, the host country of the next world exposition, Dubai Expo 2020. Afterwards, the USG and delegation were given a tour of the Italian Pavilion, where Ms. Gallach was welcomed by Italian authorities and Expo managers.
In the afternoon the USG met with the President of the Chamber of Deputies of Italy Ms Laura Boldrini and with the Executive President of Women for Expo Ms Marta Dassù.
