The UN's theme for Expo Milano 2015 explored through film in Pavilion Zero

A nine-minute film to explain the United Nations’ theme for Expo Milano 2015: “The Zero Hunger Challenge • United for a sustainable world”.  Written and directed by Costanza Quatriglio and produced by Palomar, this film is one of the main content through which the United Nations disseminates its key message for the World Exposition: ending hunger in the world is everyone’s responsibility; we all have a part to play, starting with the commitment to change simple everyday actions and decisions.

The film is projected in the “Best Practices” room of Pavilion Zero, one of the key stops on the UN’s itinerary.  Through the pavilion’s rooms, the close link between the Expo Milano 2015 theme, “Feeding the planet, Energy for life” and one of the United Nations’ fundamental missions: ensuring every person the access to safe and nutritious food that enables them to lead healthy and productive lives, without compromising the needs of future generations, is explored.

The message that Costanza Quatriglio wants the film to communicate is the importance of actions, and that gestures do count. The protagonist is a boy who «receives the knowledge of a farmer and uses it to come full circle; that small daily actions can become huge, gigantic even».  The core elements of the story are «being caring and attentive, actions and gestures».

In collaboration with the UN-Expo Team, Quatriglio took up «the challenge of creating a story as a means to explore the pillars on which the objectives of the Zero Hunger Challenge are based».

The film leaves the visitors with a clear message: “Plant an idea, rise to the Challenge”. This exhortation is totally in line with the vision of the Zero Hunger Challenge the “call to action” launched in 2012 by the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, and is made up of five elements: zero stunted children less than two years, 100% access to adequate food all year round; all food systems are sustainable; 100% increase in smallholder income and productivity; zero loss or waste of food.

When adopting the Zero Hunger Challenge as its theme for Expo Milano 2015, the United Nations has decided to pay particular attention to women and their key role in the fight against hunger and in agriculture, an issue that cuts across all of the five elements.
