Origin

The Plant Protection Committee for Southeast Asia and the Pacific was established under Article II of the Plant Protection Agreement for the Southeast Asia and Pacific Region which was approved by the Council at its 23rd Session (1955) in conformity with Article XIV of the Constitution, and entered into force on 2 July 1956.
Reflecting the extended geographical scope over the years, the amended title “Asia and Pacific Plant Protection Commission” was approved by the Council at its 75th Session (June 1979), and entered into force on 16 February 1983.

Purpose
|
To strengthen international cooperation in plant protection measures in order to prevent the introduction of destructive plant diseases and pests and their spread within the Region.

Membership
|
Any government of a State of the Region (see definition in Art. 1 of the Agreement) or which are responsible for territories in the Region, may adhere to the Agreement by depositing an instrument of acceptance with the Director-General (effective on the date of deposit).
