Origin

In early 2007, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between WHO and FAO on cooperation in a joint programme for the sound management of pesticides. It was agreed that joint technical meetings would be conducted, when appropriate, to discuss and strengthen particular areas of pesticide management. The 1st FAO/WHO Joint Meeting on Pesticide Management was held to respond to the provisions of the MoU. It allowed additional experts in the field of pesticides and public health to complement the expertise present in the FAO Panel of Experts.

Purpose

Pesticide Management is an activity carried out within the overall framework of the Plant Production and Protection Division of FAO. It is designed to work together with member countries and other International Organizations as a partner to introduce sustainable and environmentally sound agricultural practices that reduce health and environmental risks associated with the use of pesticides.

Membership

The FAO/WHO Joint Meeting on Pesticide Management is composed of experts who have been selected on the basis of their specialized knowledge for the purpose of giving independent scientific advice on all matters pertaining to pesticide management.
