Origin

Established by the Conference at its Seventh Session (Resolution 24/53) in pursuance of a resolution of the FAO Amman (Jordan) Forestry Conference in 1952.

The Council at its 139th Session changed the name from Near East Forestry Commission to Near East Forestry and Range Commission. (Resolution 2/2010)

Statutes

Adopted by the Conference at its Tenth Session (Resolution 62/59). Amended at the 19th Session of the Commission, with the subsequent approval of the Council at its 139th Session (2010).

Rules of Procedure

Adopted at the Second Session (1958), amended at the Third (1962) and Ninth (1983) Sessions.

Purpose
  • To advise on the formulation of management policy of forests, trees, range and their products, and to review and coordinate its implementation at the national and regional levels;
  • to exchange views and experiences and, generally, through special subsidiary bodies, advise on suitable practices and action in regard to technical problems and make appropriate recommendations in relation to the foregoing;
  • to examine the widening gap between present trends and the potential of forests and rangelands;
  • to identify the threats to forests and rangelands and recommend possible action.

Membership

Open to all Member Nations and Associate Members whose territories are situated wholly or in part in the Near East Region, or who are responsible for the international relations of any non-self-governing territories in the Region. Membership comprises such eligible Nations as have notified the Director-General of their desire to be considered as Members.
France, Malta, United Kingdom and United States of America, and Palestine, attend sessions as observers.
