African CITYFOOD month kicking off on 1st July

30/06/2020

From 1 to 31 July FAO is organising the first African CITYFOOD month campaign in collaboration with ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability Africa and with the support of RUAF Global Partnership on Sustainable Urban Agriculture and Food Systems.

Today, more than 472 million people live in African cities and African citizens are spending a significant amount of their budget to import food from outside the continent. This situation is not sustainable, especially after COVID-19 has shown how significantly our food trades and systems can be affected.

African consumers, Governments civil society and agribusinesses need to work together to change the way the food is produced, processed, distributed, consumed and what role urban and periurban areas play in improving that.

The African CITYFOOD Month emerges in this context and it has been developed under the FAO Framework for the Urban Food Agenda, which leverages on sub-national and local government action to ensure sustainable food systems and improved nutrition worldwide.

The campaign will share information, experiences and innovations, that can improve food and nutrition security in cities, mainly through online channels and social media - with the Hashtag #AfricanCITYFOODMonth - and following
4 main Topics:

  1. Resilient food systems,
  2. Nourishing our cities,
  3. Sustainable food value chains,
  4. Business and innovation in urban food systems.

The 4 topics represent the current main challenges for urban food systems and will be discussed through dedicated webinars, with several thought pieces, infographics as well as other information.

The campaign also aims to provide a stable learning Platform able to help cities to engage with food policies, and showcase initiatives that cities are already implementing to improve their food systems.
