DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of the Chief, Animal Production Service and the immediate supervision of the Senior Officer, Livestock Development, provides technical support and policy advice to activities in animal nutrition, feeds and related environmental issues. In particular, will:

  • participate in the design and implementation of the Division’s Regular Programme activities related to the development and utilization of feed resources, efficient animal nutrition and associated technical and policy issues as they relate to rural growth, poverty reduction and environmental sustainability;
  • undertake analytical studies on environmental issues related to feed and animal nutrition such as methane emissions, nutrient loading, water use, residues and assist in the development of life-cycle analysis for intensive and extensive feeding regimes;
  • undertake analytical studies on specific technical, trade and policy issues affecting animal nutrition and the utilization of feed resources;
  • contribute to the work of, and participate in, FAO’s interdisciplinary programmes, external partnerships and networks as they related to animal nutrition and feeds;
  • support FAO’s Field Programme, through the Sub-regional Multi-disciplinary Teams and Regional Offices in the utilization of feed resources, nutritional and feeding standards, and improved animal nutrition;
  • assist Member Countries’ develop strategies to utilize their available/potential feed resources that incorporate good and environmentally sound feeding and nutritional practices;
  • advise countries and the feed industry in developing and complying with feed safety/quality standards;
  • plan, organize and participate in scientific and technical meetings;
  • prepare and edit specialized publications concerning the above and contribute to the divisional livestock information systems and flagship publications;
  • perform other related duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:

  • Advanced University Degree in Animal Science or in Agricultural Economics or related fields
  • Seven years of relevant working experience in animal nutrition and the sustainable development of feed resources
  • Working knowledge of either English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two

SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be assessed against the following:

  • Extent and relevance of experience in and knowledge of livestock feeding and applications of improved animal nutrition in livestock production systems
  • Relevance and level of academic qualifications
  • Depth of understanding of the scientific nutritional, environmental and policy constraints affecting major livestock feeding systems in both developed and developing countries
  • Extent of knowledge of and experience in project formulation and funding requirements of major multilateral and bilateral funding agencies
  • Proven ability to analyse, interpret and report on issues related to animal nutrition at an international level
  • Quality of both oral and written communication skills on technical issues, in English

REMUNERATION

Level P-4 carries a net salary per year (inclusive of a variable element for post adjustment) from US$ 112,043 US$ 140,483 (without dependants) and from US$ 120,319 to US$ 151,729 (with dependants)
