DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the overall direction of the Director, Forest Management Division, and the direct supervision and guidance of the Chief, Forest Resources Development Service, with wide latitude for personal initiative will provide technical support to and be responsible for the promotion and development of programmes and activities in the field of sustainable management of tropical and non-tropical forest ecosystems. Specifically will:

  • design and implement normative activities in the planning and sustainable management of forests and woodlands aimed at the production of a range of goods and services towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals;
  • maintain and regularly update databases, case studies and web-based information systems and prepare publications on sustainable management of forests and woodlands for dissemination to member countries and key stakeholders and partners from time to time;
  • provide inputs on sustainable management of forests and woodlands, in support of other technical and policy-related activities of the Forestry Department including National Forest Programmes, National Forest Monitoring and Assessment, Global Forest Resources Assessment;
  • design and implement field projects and programmes in member countries in sustainable management of forests and woodlands; provide technical backstopping and reporting as required;
  • plan, organize, participate in and report on international, national and sub-national meetings and workshops in the field of sustainable management of forests and woodlands;
  • contribute to international activities, organize meetings and promote international collaboration in the field of sustainable management of forests and woodlands; support the work of international agencies, institutions, mechanisms and processes;
  • prepare and disseminate information on sustainable management of forests and woodlands; support networks, websites, partnerships and twinning among countries and institutes on the subjects;
  • perform other related duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:

  • Advanced University Degree in Forestry or related field
  • Seven years of relevant experience in forest management including international experience in developing countries or those in transition
  • Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two

SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be assessed against the following:

  • Relevance and level of academic qualifications
  • Extent of national and international working experience in forest management (field experience in tropical countries preferred)
  • Depth of understanding of the principles, concepts, criteria and indicators and key policy issues of sustainable forest management
  • Quality of written, oral and electronic communication skills on technical issues, case studies and reporting systems (including website supervision) to transfer knowledge to international stakeholders
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively in, and/or lead multidisciplinary teams working with Government Officials and a wide range of stakeholder groups in a range of country contexts
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate, provide technical backstopping to and supervise implementation of projects in forest management
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, and conduct national and international meetings on forest management
  • Extent of linguistic skills in the official languages of FAO: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish

* The length of appointment for internal FAO candidates will be established in accordance with applicable policies pertaining to the extension of appointments.

REMUNERATION

Level P-4 carries a net salary per year (inclusive of a variable element for post adjustment) from US$ 96,846 US$ 118,663 (without dependants) and from US$ 104,000 to US$ 128,163 (with dependants)
