DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of the Chief, Fishery Management and Conservation Service, and in collaboration with other technical officers, the incumbent will perform duties to assist in the development and implementation of the programme of activities of the Service in the field of inland fisheries management and conservation. In particular, will:

  • participate in the preparation of periodic resource reviews for countries and regions as required;
  • promote, in cooperation with relevant FAO technical units and regional and sub-regional offices, the development of improved theory and methods for management of inland fisheries and conservation of resources within an ecosystem approach to fisheries, to include key environmental and ecosystem factors as well as social and economic considerations;
  • promote the development of improved theory and methods in quantitative methods for inland fisheries modelling and assessment;
  • take the technical lead, as assigned, in relevant new issues that may emerge;
  • participate in the organization and conduct of training courses in inland fisheries management within an ecosystem approach;
  • promote, assist and, as required, act as Technical Secretary to committees, working parties and working groups of regional fishery committees and commissions concerned with inland fisheries management and conservation;
  • provide technical support to Member countries as requested;
  • develop project proposals on inland fisheries management/conservation and participate in their implementation;
  • perform other related duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:

  • Advanced University Degree in Biology, Fishery Science, Freshwater Ecology or closely related discipline
  • Seven years of relevant experience in inland fisheries assessment and management which included practical field experience within international settings and in developing countries
  • Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two

SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be assessed against the following:

  • Relevance and level of academic qualifications
  • Extent and relevance of international field experience in inland fisheries assessment and management with particular reference to Africa, Asia and/or Latin America
  • Extent and relevance of experience in quantitative modelling and assessment of inland fisheries
  • Extent, relevance and diversity of scientific publications and reports produced
  • Depth of knowledge of current global issues, trends and constraints, related to the assessment, conservation and management of wild fish stocks and related ecosystems
  • Quality of oral, written and analytical skills on technical issues in English

* The length of appointment for internal FAO candidates will be established in accordance with applicable policies pertaining to the extension of appointments.

REMUNERATION

Level P-4 carries a net salary per year (inclusive of a variable element for post adjustment) from US$ 96,846 US$ 118,663 (without dependants) and from US$ 104,000 to US$ 128,163 (with dependants)
