31/07/2019 - 01/08/2019 Nairobi, Kenya

The fisheries and aquaculture sectors have enormous potential to underpin poverty eradication, food security, employment and economic growth and can offer a path to sustainable development. However, at the same time, the sectors are influenced by a number of factors that limit transparency and weaken enforcement of applicable labor and human rights standards. Therefore, If not adequately addressed, the expansion of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors, in the African region, may further exacerbate human rights violations.

Human rights and labor standards, can provide essential guidance and accountability framework to ensure that the potential of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors is fulfilled in a way that balances the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainability, and realize the human rights of all.
