We are pleased to inform you that a common language for soils and a universally accepted system of soil classification have been endorsed by the 16th World Congress of Soil Science, held at Montpellier, France, 20–26 August 1998. This system, developed by the Working Group on the World Reference Base with the active assistance from AGLL, has published its findings in three publications. 

The last of these three, dealing with the technical explanation and the classification key to the system, is published by FAO as World Soil Resources Report 84: «World Reference Base for Soil Resources».

Presently this and the other two volumes are being translated into French, Spanish, Chinese, German and Italian. These translated texts will become available in the course of 1999.
