CAC41 Side-event: The Burden of Foodborne Diseases: a Need for National Studies

Plenary Hall (FAO Headquarters)
04.07.2018
 Rome time

Foodborne diseases affect all individuals in all societies, and range in severity from diarrhoeal diseases to various forms of cancer, and sometimes even cause death. The complexity of measuring the true magnitude of the burden presents many unique challenges. Building national capacity to enable the measurement of the burden of foodborne diseases can be seen as a first step towards assessing the effectiveness of a national food safety system, thereby giving appropriate attention to this often under-estimated problem. Building on the WHO 2015 report on the estimates of the global burden of foodborne diseases, this side event aims to highlight the importance of conducting a national estimate.
