Committee on Fisheries - 33rd Session

COFI33 - Transforming Transshipment – Ensuring the Legal and Verifiable Transfer of Catch

Austria Room (FAO Headquarters)
10.07.2018
 Rome time

Transshipment, or the transfer of catch between a fishing vessel and a carrier vessel, is an important part of the global commercial fishing industry. But despite the vast impact on international fisheries, current regulatory control and monitoring of transshipment is inadequate, especially when it occurs at sea and outside the view and reach of authorities. These gaps create opportunities for illicit activities, such as misreporting or non-reporting of catches, that result in the laundering of millions of dollars of illegally-caught fish each year. Watch as a panel of experts identify a pathway towards transshipment reform and present a conversation on the need for clear and consistent global rules for managing and monitoring transshipment.
