5.2 Defining information architecture

What is information architecture?

The Information Architecture Institute defines information architecture as:

  • the structural design of shared information environments;
  • the art and science of organizing and labelling Web sites, intranets, online communities and software to support usability and findability; and
  • an emerging community of practice focused on bringing principles of design and architecture to the digital landscape.

The above are not definitive, but they represent a clear trend in the field of Web publishing and Internet dissemination.

This topic aims to provide some guidance on how the navigation and labelling of a Web site can be utilized to maximize usability.
