1. Introduction to the Web Guide

The FAO Web Guide aims to make Web publishing in FAO more efficient and effective. The Web Guide collects in one convenient place the guidelines, procedures and policies for the smooth implementation and maintenance of FAO Web sites.

The Web Guide is aimed at Web site owners, content providers, designers, information architects, systems developers (internal and contractors) and technical officers in charge of managing Web sites and information systems.

Knowing whether a practice is mandatory or a guideline that can be adapted to your specific needs, can make a difference in the way you manage a project. The Web Guide contains mostly guidelines. Procedures and policies are clearly marked.

Guideline

Guideline is a recommended course of action in support of a set of principles and specific to a particular area. It provides advice to assist in accomplishing a given task.

Procedure

Procedure indicates a systematic sequence of events needed to carry out a task. It may be a formal procedure that is officially recognized at FAO.

Policy

Policy is an FAO corporate principle or goal that requires mandatory compliance.
