Shaping the future of the FAO Web site

A workshop took place at the beginning of October with the aim of achieving a consensus on how the FAO Web site should be upgraded to meet today’s needs. View the Executive Summary.

One of the outcomes was a draft statement of purpose for www.fao.org:

To advance the global goals of FAO Members, by:

  • influencing the global debate on food, agriculture and related issues
  • being a trusted and authoritative source of knowledge and data on those same issues
  • making visible the work of the Organization, and the impact it is having.

Web Governance structure

The workshop also identified the need for a uniform, modern tool for delivering Web content, and for easier ways of accessing data from FAO’s many information systems.

It highlighted the importance of a coherent “brand” identity for FAO Web pages, more interactivity with users, and regular “pruning” or archiving of pages that are no longer maintained.

Further work was done on navigation by topic rather than by “silo,” and on alternative entry points for special groups such as Members, donors, journalists, and young people.

The two workstreams – both aimed at upgrading FAO’s Web presence – will now come together in the new Web Management team, which is set to have its first meeting shortly.
