2.7 Static and dynamic content

Web pages can be either static HTML or dynamic pages. Static HTML pages are text files that are simply displayed by a browser, whereas dynamic Web pages are assembled as they are requested and the content depends upon the request. There are also a few examples of hybrid sites that combine both static and dynamic content.

FAO has used different technologies to produce both static and dynamic content.

More recently at FAO, Web pages are being generated by content management systems (CMS) such as TYPO3, Drupal and Joomla.

Using a CMS allows content creators to submit content such as text, images, video etc. without requiring technical knowledge of HTML or the uploading of files. Also, programmers can easily add code developed by a wider community, and for free in the case of open source CMS, greatly increasing the possibility of utilizing data and multimedia.
