A 2004 World Food Day issue: Rural women in Mountain regions and biodiversity

FAO experience in Biodiversity for Food Security

It is estimated that about three-quarters of the genetic diversity found in agricultural crops have been lost over the last century. Animal species are endangered. FAO calls for global efforts in conserving, preserving and improving the few species that are left to the future generations.

Peter Kenmore is an FAO expert in Biodiversity and has experience in better ways to protect our ecosystems for a sustainable agriculture. He had this to say.

At the farm level, Asia has adopted good practices in agriculture and maintained species' varieties at a higher level. At a global level, countries will feel encouraged by the coming into force of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, in June 23, 2004. Again, Peter Kenmore.

World Food Day feature 2004: Growing indigenous fruit trees on farms to reduce hunger and poverty

The northeastern communities of Namibia cultivate sorghum, millet and maize on the fertile ground, but the nearby bush and forests have always been an important source of nutritious wild fruits. In the regions of Caprivi and Kavango, about 66 wild fruit tree species have been identified that contribute daily to the diets and income of the local communities, mostly during the rainy season when the crops are not ready for harvest.

This is a radio reportage on a FAO project that helps improve the use of wild fruit trees to supplement diets and incomes in rural communities in Namibia.
