The mega-concert Music vs. Hunger will take place on 21 September in Asunción under the high patronage of the First Lady of Paraguay, Maria Gloria Penayo de Duarte, FAO's first Ambassador Extraordinary since 16 October 2005.
This event without parallel in Paraguay will take place in the country's largest stadium, "Defensores del Chaco".
Once again a musical event will sensitize public opinion to the problem of hunger in the world and will help finance small agricultural projects for poor households to produce more food.
Renowned international artists will be taking part in the concert, which will be broadcast regionally and internationally thanks to one of TeleFood's most faithful partners, Intelsat. Several FAO Goodwill Ambassadors have responded to the call: Ronan Keating (Ireland), Noa (Israel) and Al Bano Carrisi (Italy). Paraguayan artists will be joined by other stars including Paul Young (UK), Chichi Peralta (Dominican Republic) and Axel (Argentina).
Each singer will perform three songs then, together, will sing the closing choral song that has been specially written by Maestro Renato Serio, who directed the Vatican concert and will be accompanied by a symphony orchestra, a rhythmic section and a chorus.
FAO's Goodwill Ambassadors Ronan Keating, Al Bano and Gilberto Gil (whose ministerial duties will prevent him from attending the concert) have recorded promotional messages that have been regularly screened on the country's main television channels. FAO's Director-General has expressed his profound appreciation of this important event in two messages of support that have also been transmitted on Paraguayan television.
The concert will be broadcast live by the National Television System, Paraguay's main television network. Giant screens will be assembled in the principal towns for the public to follow the event and TeleFood fund-raising activities will be organized throughout the country.
As Gilberto Gil said in his message of support, eliminating hunger is not an impossible dream if people band together to make it happen. Hence his appeal not to miss the appointment on 21 September in the "Defensores del Chaco" Stadium.
