Run for Food in the race against hunger
Second annual Run for Food race through
Rome, 21 October 2007
Rome, 4 June 2007 - With nearly 4000 participants in the first edition of the Run for Food event held in Rome in 2006, this year’s race to commemorate World Food Day, is expected to attract still higher numbers of athletes and non-athletes alike in the race to reduce the number of hungry people in the world.
In 2006, 87.8 million people in 78 countries received food assistance. Among these were internally displaced people, refugees, HIV/AIDS orphans, and victims of natural disasters such as floods and drought.
With over 850 million hungry people, 820 of whom are in the developing countries, and the majority of whom live in rural areas, the Rome-based food and agriculture agencies through this second edition of the Run for Food race aim to highlight the plight of over one-seventh of the world’s population.
This year’s Run for Food, being organized by the Athletic Association Bancari Romani in partnership with FAO, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the World Food Programme (WFP), and Bioversity International, will take place on Sunday 21 October, and will follow a five-kilometre route through the historic centre of Rome starting and ending at the stadium just outside FAO headquarters at the Baths of Caracalla.
The theme of this year’s World Food Day is the Right to Food which means the right of every person to have regular access to sufficient, nutritionally adequate and culturally acceptable food for an active, healthy life. By recognizing the human right of every individual to food, governments have an obligation to respect, protect and fulfil this right.

When and where: Sunday 21 October 2007 inside the Stadium (Terme di Caracalla) at 8.00 a.m. Race start 10.00 a.m. from Via delle Terme di Caracalla.
Distance: 5 kilometres.
Race: Competitive for those with a valid FIDAL card or Non-competitive
