The first webinar of the Task Force on Gender Equity (GE-TF) on the healthy and safe employment of women workers will be taking place on Thursday, 23 July 2020 from 16:00 – 18:00 CEST. Among the topics to be discussed are the new ‘Guidelines for the healthy and safe employment of women in the Ghanaian banana industry’ - produced under the framework of the WBF Banana Occupational Health and Safety Initiative - and their adaptation for other countries and regions.
In light of the current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the WBF and its members are diligently working to implement the highest levels of health and safety standards on banana plantations in efforts to ensure the well-being of all workers in the industry.
The world’s most popular fruit is under siege. How it adapts now could be crucial to understanding the post-pandemic era. This crisis might just be different. Just as Covid-19 will lead to new ways of producing and consuming, so it may spur the banana industry to change, says the FAO’s Liu. “This pandemic is a disaster for the world,” he said. “But maybe the silver lining is that humans can think about doing things in a more sustainable way.”

3 October 2019, Rome - The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has launched an emergency project under its Technical Cooperation Programme to help countries in Latin America and the Caribbean fight the spread of Fusarium wilt, a fungal plant disease that can wipe out the banana crops upon which the livelihoods of millions of people depend.
