World Food Day in Brazil

The FAO office in Brazil and the Ministry of Social and Agricultural Development organized the III Fair dedicated to World Food Day on 18 October with over 100 participants. The event took  place in the National Institute of Meteorology in Brasilia and was attended by Osmar Terra, the Minister of Social and Agricultural Development, Alan Bojanic, in representation of FAO Brazil, Mauricio Lopes, President of the Brazilian Agricultural Research, Raimundo Deusdará Filho, the Director-General of the Brazilian Forest Service, José Mauro Vice-Director of the National Institute of Meteorology, Ana Carolina Querino, officer-in-charge of the UN Office for Women Brasil, Everton Ferreira, Representative of the Special Secretariat for Family agriculture and agricultural Development of the Civil House, and Alberto Broch, President of the National Confederation of Agricultural Workers (CONTAG).

The President of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), Maurício Lopes, delivered the keynote address at the event. Lopes discussed upcoming challenges over the next decades and mentioned how agriculture as one of the ways to tackle climate change.

Following the speech, participants attended a presentation on the importance of healthy eating by students in a public school in Brasilia. The children danced and recited a text about healthy eating habits they acquired at school.

A tasting session of family farming products based around the typical Brazilian cerrado closed the event.
