World Food Day Seminar in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka - 18/10/2016

A seminar dedicated to World Food Day was held on 18 October 2016 at Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo under the patronage of the Minister of Agriculture Duminda Dissanayake, who was represented by Gerry Jayawardane, Advisor to the Ministry of Agriculture, and Agriculture Research Policy Project Chairman. Nina Brandstrup, FAO Representative for Sri Lanka and the Maldives and Anusha Kumar-Singh-Wong, Nutrition Officer, WFP also attended the seminar.

This year FAO planned a knowledge sharing session to convey the message of World Food Day to the officers or members who have the influence to make a change. The theme of Climate Change and Agriculture was divided into sub themes, including ‘Preparedness for climate change in food and agriculture’, ‘Initiatives to adapt agriculture inputs to climate change’ and ‘Preparedness for Climate Change by communities’.

These themes were conveyed through presentations by Punyawadane, Senior Climatologist at the Department of Agriculture, Waruna Madawanaarachchi, CIC Seed Director, and Anuradha Wickramasinghe, Chairman of the Small Fishers Federation of Sri Lanka. A satire on the theme was performed by the Friends Multi-creations team.
