World Food Day in Guatemala

The event "Science, culture and art contribute to mitigating the effects of climate change" kicked off  World Food Day 2016 celebrations in Guatemala on 6 October in the Municipal Theater of Quetzaltenango. The event was organized by FAO, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) and the Municipal School of Dance of Quetzaltenango, with support from the Government of Sweden and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AECID).  High-level authorities participated in the event including the Mayor of Quetzaltenango; the Departmental Head of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), Orlan Rhodes; the Director of the Municipal School of Dance of the House of Culture of the West, Glenda Gallardo; representatives of the Food Bank of Guatemala (BAG) on behalf of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the agronomist Israel Cifuentes.

During the event, a ballet was performed by the Municipal School of Dance of Quetzaltenango inspired by the WFD theme "The climate is changing, food and agriculture must too".

A book on the "Night beetle" by Guatemalan writer Juan Jose Guerrero Perez, winner of the Iberoamerican Literary Games 2014, was also presented.

Other World Food Day activities in Guatemala included a contest on good resilience practices, supported by FAO, and a Run Against Hunger, all in the municipality of Chiquimula.
