Official Celebration of WFD in Zambia
The official celebration of World Food Day in Zambia was held in Shimabala, Kafue district at a farm that practices conservation agriculture. The FAO Representative in Zambia, George Okech hosted the event, with Dora Siliya, Minister of Agriculture, was the guest of honour. Other special guests included Janet Rogan UN Resident Coordinator; Simon Cammelbeeck, WFP Representative/Country Director; Mary Otieno, UNFPA Representative; officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and government and district officials from Lusaka, Chongwe and Kafue districts. In her speech, Siliya noted the need for diversification in agriculture and nutrition to ensure food security. She also emphasised the need to ensure effective communication and coverage of agriculture issues by media. Following the speeches, awards were presented to local farmers. Eleman Mumba, whose farm hosted the WFD event, received the host farmer award. The event concluded with a march that passed through the main post office along Cairo road in Lusaka, to Autoworld Downtown, with the FAO Representative, senior government officials and cooperating partners.
Conservation farming is a climate smart practice, supported by the Conservation Agriculture Scaling up (CASU) project in Zambia and funded by the European Union. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have jointly implement the project in 48 districts of Zambia.
