World Food Day in Cambodia

World Food Day 2016 was celebrated in Svay Rieng province on 16 October 2016 at an event that welcomes over 600 participants including representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), FAO, WFP and other local and international organizations, development partners, embassy representatives, local authorities, farmers, and members of the private sector.  The event was opened by Men Vibol, the Provincial Governor of Svay Rieng, GianPietro Bordignon, WFP Representative and Alexandre Huynh, FAO Representative.  Keynote speakers included Veng Sakhon, Minister of MAFF, who highlighted climate challenges faced by the agriculture sector and progress made in adapting to climate change. The Deputy Prime Minister of the Royal Government of Cambodia acknowledged how Cambodia has achieved the Millennium Development Goal 1 of eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, but emphasized how the agricultural sector remains a top priority for the Government. The speeches were followed by a presentation of rice seeds and trees to farmers from various communes and a tree planting ceremony.  Guests also visited organic product exhibitions organized by different farmer associations. To conclude the celebrations, Veng Sakhon, Minister of MAFF guided the participants on a visit to an Integrated System Farm and the Svay Rieng Agro-Product Cooperative project
