World Food Day in Gambia

Gambia - 16/10/2016

Gambia observed both World Food Day and the International Day for Rural Women in the provincial town of Janjanbureh on 16 October . The event which attracted hundreds of people from across the country was jointly organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, FAO, World Food Programme (WFP) and other key stakeholders. The ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Fatou Lamin Faye deputising for the Gambian First Lady, Madam Zeinab Yahya Jammeh.

The key highlights of the event included a 1km procession by school children, farmers and Civil Society organizations led by the host Regional Governor Alhagie Omar Khan and his district chiefs. Other senior government officials and the FAO and WFP country representatives also joined the parade. Statements were delivered by dignitaries during the rally that ensued, all focusing on this year’s theme - ‘‘Climate is Changing. Food and Agriculture must too.’’ This was followed by a captivating drama by students of Armitage Senior Secondary School that highlighted the devastating effects of illegal and unsustainable logging practices on the agriculture sectors and livelihoods. An exhibition was also held with farm produce and products from farmers and food processors, as well as art work by students from across the country.
