World Food Day in Paraguay

Paraguay - 14/10/2016

World Food Day was celebrated in conjunction with the International Year of pulses in Paraguay at a Grand Fair on 14 October in the Juan E. O'Leary Square, downtown Asuncion. The event was organized by the Committee Pro International Year of Pulses, composed of representatives from various government institutions, civil society and academic organizations.

The event was attended by Rolf Hackbart, Permanent Representative of FAO in Paraguay; Juan Carlos Baruja, Minister of Agriculture; Laura Mendoza from the National Institute of Food and Nutrition (that forms part of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare); and Luis Wagner, parliamentary member of the National Commission for the Defense of Natural Resources of the National Congress.

The fair hosted more than 20 stands. Government institutions and civil society members of the Pro Committee promoted various actions to fight food waste, preserve forests and soils as well as livestock and aquaculture activities. Other stands promoted the advantages of pulses and their contribution to the mitigation of climate change and included displays of typical vegetable-based meals and dishes made with porotada and native pulses seeds. Food produced by family farms, and handicrafts made by indigenous communities within the country and cities surrounding the capital, were also on display.
