World Food Day in Rwanda

Rwanda - 20/10/2016

Rwanda commemorated World Food Day on 20 October at the MURORI site in Gishamvu Sector in the Huye District. The event was attended by the Minister of State in Charge of Agriculture, FAO and WFP Country Representatives, and over 2,500 guests from farmers to government officials and FAO staff. A number of activities were carried out during the event including the cutting of progressive terracing on the hills around MURORI marshlands, the planting maize seedlings and bean shoots, as well as the construction of pits for water catching. Like many other countries around the world, Rwanda has suffered climatic shocks. The  negative impacts of drought and floods have affected the Eastern Province of the country, thus affecting agricultural productivity and undermining food security. In line with this year’s World Food Day theme, the Minister of State for Agriculture, Fulgence Nsengiyumva, called on farmers to adopt new agricultural technology such as irrigation and water harvesting. The FAO Representative in Rwanda, Attaher Maiga, said that climate change, hunger and poverty must be addressed together in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals set by the international community. During the event, 15 vulnerable households with malnourished children each received a cow and agricultural inputs to improve their nutrition and incomes and children were given milk to fight malnutrition.
