CRESCITA – CALLING ON ITALIAN GENEROSITY

A national SMS fundraising campaign in Italy, “Crescita” -- with Olympic fencing champion Valentina Vezzali as spokesperson – kicks off on 21 October.  The campaign will appear on national television and will be promoted by football leagues at stadiums across Italy. Donations via SMS or telephone call will help poor women in drought-affected Kenya.

The “Crescita” campaign is an initiative of the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Rome-based food agencies – FAO, IFAD, WFP and Bioversity International – joining forces again this year for a week-long campaign running from 21 to 28 October 2012.  The campaign forms part of Italy’s observance of World Food Day.

Funds raised through the “Crescita” campaign will support a field project benefitting poor women and their communities in Mwingi, Kenya.  The Italian government and the food agencies agree that “only by empowering women, who make up the majority of the agricultural labour force,  can there be hope for improved food security in Kenya.”
