How FAO assists members in Europe and Central Asia

Services regularly provided by FAO in the European Region include: monitoring of world and regional food production and trade; assisting in agriculture, forestry, fisheries, statistics and nutrition; controlling plant and animal diseases; assisting in the establishment and application of food standards; training in World Trade Organization-related matters; studying and analysing agricultural policy and rural development issues. In addition, as an intergovernmental agency, FAO can play the valuable role of honest broker for its member countries. With assistance from FAO, certain politically or socially sensitive topics can be constructively addressed. These may include issues such as gender equality or aspects of national legislative frameworks relating to, for example, land tenure or food safety. FAO is also present in Europe through a number of commissions, working parties and expert groups which provide regular fora for reviewing topical rural sector issues, bringing together government officials and experts from throughout the Region. Every two years, FAO organizes a Regional Conference which brings together high-level representatives from all the member countries in the Region; it is a unique forum for review on a region-wide basis of issues of concern in the rural sector and of FAO activities and programmes in the Region.
