Promoting the Formulation and Implementation of Sustainable Agricultural and Rural Development Policy Reforms for Eradication of Food Insecurity, Malnutrition and Rural Poverty

RNE provides support to Member Countries in preparing National Medium-Term Priority Frameworks (NMTPFs) as well as sector/sub-sector strategies and policies. This will take into consideration existing National Programmes for Food Security (NPFS), which aim at improving livelihoods through food security policies, sustainable integration of crops, rangelands, livestock, fisheries (including aquaculture) and agro-forestry. RNE will assist countries to:

  • Raise a widely shared and labor intensive economic growth;
  • Generate employment;
  • Increase food production;
  • Invest in human development;
  • Enhance access of rural poor including women to natural resources, basic infrastructure and social services;
  • Halt the degradation of the natural resource base and promote its conservation;
  • Support National Integrated Pest Management Programmes (IPM);
  • Improve national capacities in the monitoring and design of effective programmes for reducing hunger and undernourishment through the Food Insecurity and Vulnerability Information and Mapping Systems (FIVIMS) as well as promote food security in national development plans;
  • Assess human nutrition problems and requirements;
  • Enhance national capacities in raising livestock and modernization of the crop sub-sector; and
  • Support the integration of pastoral systems into the broad agricultural production domain (pasture/crop/livestock integration) through effective community based management and support capacity building in ecosystem approach to rangelands as multiple-use resources.
