Water Resources Development and Management

Assistance is provided to member states in elaborating policies and strategies and making sound plans for the development and management of their water resources. These strategies and plans are developed further into regulations, programmes and projects for implementation. Adequate systems for monitoring, review, evaluation and policy reform are also established, focusing on water scarcity.

This is achieved in particular through:

·         Providing the member countries with appropriate policies, methodologies and guidelines for sustainable water resources development and management,

·         Creating awareness at various levels, including decision-makers,

·         Lobbying and advocacy for sound decision making and funding,

·         Capacity building and institutional strengthening,

·         Developing databases on water resources and agricultural water use,

·         Creating country profiles on rural water use;

·         Continuous updating of statistics on irrigation in the Near East Region.

Data on water resources and their use are collected, analyzed and inserted into a database for the Region (see Irrigation and Agricultural Water Use in the Near East Region). Country profiles are currently under preparation and will be produced and published in a special volume for the Region.
