Livestock and integrated production programme

Livestock - cattle, sheep, goats, poultry, donkeys, camels, horses and water buffalo - are vital for food security for millions of Afghans. Most households derive essential nutrients from dairy products, eggs and meat, and animals are important economic assets.

There are two major systems of livestock husbandry: sedentary farmers who practice mixed livestock and crop production, and nomads, locally known as Kuchis, who mainly depend on livestock for their living. The Kuchis have been especially hard hit by drought.
