FAO in Armenia

FAO leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. FAO is also a source of knowledge and information. The organization helps developing countries and countries in transition modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices and ensure good nutrition for all. Since its founding in 1945, FAO has focused special attention on developing rural areas, home to 70 percent of the world's poor and hungry people. FAO's activities comprise four main areas:

* Putting information within reach;
* Sharing policy expertise;
* Providing a meeting place for nations;
* Bringing knowledge to the field.

Today, FAO is one of the largest specialized agencies in the United Nations system and the lead agency for agriculture, forestry, fisheries and rural development. An intergovernmental organization, FAO has 187 member countries plus one member organization, the European Community.

The Republic of Armenia became a member of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations on 8 November 1993. Since becoming a Member Nation of FAO the Armenian Government has received FAO’s support in implementing various development and emergency projects aiming at increasing agricultural productivity and the level of food security in the country.

The FAO representation office in Armenia was opened in September 2004 by Dr. Jacques Diouf, Director-General of FAO. Both FAO and the Government of the Republic of Armenia consider the inauguration of the FAO office in Armenia to be the outcome of successful cooperative efforts over the last decade.
