Ceremony Held on the Occasion of World Food Day

On 13th of October 2006 at 12:00 in the big Hall of Armavir Marzpetaran in Armavir City a ceremony was held on the occasion of the World Food Day. About 200 people (from the Ministry of Agriculture, non-governmental organizations, Armenian State Agriculture University, UN agencies, donor community and international organizations, farmers, teachers and students from the Armavir Agriculture College after S. Lukashin, mass media, etc.) were participating to the event.

Mr. Albert Heroyan, Governor of Armavir Marz, opened the World Food Day Ceremony.

Mr Davit Lokyan, Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Armenia, in his speech welcomed the participants of World Food Day ceremony, he particularly mentioned that each year on 16 October, the Food and Agriculture organization of the United Nations celebrates World Food Day, and this year it is the 26th anniversary of WFD. Mr. Lokyan, in particular, emphasized the achievements in agriculture production made by producers of Armavir Marz, talked about problems and future programs which are targeted at addressing these problems. The Minister thanked to all farmers and NGOs, international and donor organization for their significant support to the agriculture development in Armenia and for poverty reduction in the rural areas.

Mr. Avetik Nersisyan, Assistant FAO Representative read the message of FAO Director General on WFD and also welcomed all participants on behalf of Ms. Maria Kadlecikova, FAO Sub-Regional Representative and FAO Representative in Armenia.

Ms. Consuelo Vidal, UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative made a welcome speech emphasizing the importance of goals and programs which are directed to poverty reduction in rural areas of the country.

Mr. A. Khojoyan, Chief Editor of “AgroNews” Magazine made a speech on “FAO as Information Sources for Agriculture and Rural Development” informing the participants of the celebration about the cooperation between the Government and FAO to create an agriculture and rural information network in Armenia.

Ms. Consuelo Vidal on behalf of Ms. Maria Kadlecikova, FAO Representative in Armenia on the occasion of the World Food Day awarded the World Food Day 2006 medals to people and institution who had considerable inputs in Armenia’s agriculture development.

The WFD – 2006 celebration has been continued with planting of trees in the Armavir State Agriculture College after S. Lukashin. After it participants were invited to the reception and to jointly celebrate the WFD and Harvest Day.

Minister for Agriculture Mr. Lokyan, UN Resident coordinator Ms Vidal and Assistant FAO Representative Mr. Avetik Nersisyan made speeches and congratulated all participants with WFD and Harvest day Celebration.

More than three hundred people were participating in this event. There were twelve tables decorated by the students of the college. Food and drinks were mostly produced by the college students. The best 2 tables got prizes from FAO.

This event was well attended by mass media and broadly presented in all Armenian TV channels, broadcast and news papers.
